The short answer
Never drive into a restricted centre because the hotel is inside it. Get the exact route and registration process in writing, then keep the car parked.

Zona a Traffico Limitato means limited traffic zone. Rules vary by municipality, zone, vehicle and time. Electronic gates may record number plates, so discovering the restriction after crossing the line is too late.
A green or inactive-looking signal should never be interpreted from memory. Read the sign at the specific gate and use the municipality’s current information. Pedestrian streets and restricted lanes can exist inside a ZTL even when a hotel guest has permission to enter the wider zone.
A hotel booking is not automatically permission
Some accommodation providers inside a ZTL can register a guest vehicle or regularise an authorised arrival. The process and time window are local. Treat it as a service that must be explicitly confirmed, not a benefit implied by the reservation.
Before arrival, send the number plate and nationality in writing. Ask for the exact authorised gate, route, permitted arrival window, garage address and confirmation that registration is complete. Save the reply. If the hotel cannot answer precisely, use a garage outside the zone.
Florence: park once
Florence’s historic centre is controlled by a ZTL and includes areas where ordinary vehicle access is not permitted. The city’s accommodation procedure allows qualifying properties to place guest vehicles on a temporary list, but the property must handle the process and the driver must follow the permitted route.
For a sports-car trip, the practical conclusion is stronger than the legal detail: choose a property with a proven parking procedure, enter only on its instructions and leave the car parked while exploring the centre.
Milan: separate Area C from every other rule
Area C is a charged limited traffic zone in central Milan with electronic gates. The city states that it operates Monday to Friday, 07:30–19:30, excluding public holidays, and provides an online plate-and-nationality check.
That does not mean every vehicle that can enter is automatically paid, activated or correctly parked. Check vehicle eligibility, buy and activate any required ticket, and still follow the hotel or garage instructions. Area C and a hotel garage solve different problems.
Judge the whole parking movement
“Private parking” tells you very little. Ask whether it is enclosed, staffed, valet-operated or simply a reserved outdoor space. For a low car, the decisive sequence is pavement edge, gate width, turn, ramp break-over, speed bumps and the space available to open the door.
Reserve the space, request a street-level photo when in doubt and keep an exterior alternative. A famous hotel with an impossible garage is not a car-friendly hotel.
The five-step arrival workflow
- Locate the restricted zone and the exact garage before departure.
- Send the vehicle details and receive written instructions.
- Approach on the authorised route without following a generic map shortcut.
- Keep the registration or ticket confirmation.
- At checkout, confirm whether any exit or repeat-entry action is required.
